About Us

Who We Are

Among the influx of Sri Lankans in the 70s and the 80s were many alumnae of Visakha scattered across the UK , needing friendship and camaraderie, help and support to settle down in a new country. It was to meet this need, and to act as a surrogate family that a group of friends first got together. The importance of this support was realised very quickly & lead to the birth of our Association.

The inaugural meeting convened by Kumari Abeygunawardena was held in 1983 at her residence. Over 40 alumnae attended . The objectives identified were, helping Visakha & Visakhians. In order to realize these aims we agreed to meet periodically both socially and for fundraising .

35 years on we see a range of activities beyond what was envisaged in 1983. Our activities developed in response to needs as they arose both at Visakha and in our country. This , we feel , has been the strength of this Association. We are very happy to note that in this centennial year we have been able to raise over ten thousand pounds for projects which are described elsewhere.

The Buddhist and cultural values of our school as envisaged by our founder Selestina Dias are integral to all our activities.
